Palau de la Generalitat

Palau de la Generalitat

Today’s Palau de la Generalitat combines Gothic, Renaissance and Neo-Gothic elements. The original construction dates from 1403 and made use of several expropriated houses in the Jewish quarter. The master builder Marc Safont was responsible for the courtyard, the chapel of Saint George and the Gothic façade overlooking Carrer del Bisbe.

The artist Pere Blai added the Renaissance elements, including in particular the main façade, considered the first great Renaissance façade in civil architecture in Catalonia.

It is of interest for its gargoyles (Bernat Montaner i Pau Forner, 1598), the Neo-Gothic bridge connecting the Palau to the Casa dels Canonges (1928) and the paintings by contemporary artists like Antoni Clavé, Joan Hernández Pijuan and Antoni Tàpies.

Open Saturdays and Sundays (9 am to 1 pm and 4.30 pm to 7 pm).
