Located next to Barcelona cathedral. It exhibits works left to the city by the collector and sculptor Frederic Marès i Deulovol (1893-1991). It is housed in one of the buildings of the Palau Reial Major (12th century).
The most striking exhibition is the one of sculptures, which includes items from the Pre-Romanesque period and up to the beginning of the 20th century, as well as some by Marès himself. One of the most outstanding works is the relief of the Apparition of Jesus to His Disciples at Sea, from the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes.
The Collector’s Cabinet exhibits objects from everyday life in the 19th century, such as clocks, fans, Nativity figures, toys and smoker’s articles. On the second floor there are Frederic Marès’s study and library. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions. In summer, we recommend a visit to the cafeteria open in the attractive inner courtyard.
Closed on Mondays. It can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday (10 am to 7 pm) and Sundays and holidays (10 am to 3 pm).
